Research Purposes
The study aimed to evaluate the new English
Language Teaching Program (ELTP) of Turkey for secondary education in terms of
peace education.
Research Subject
The subject of this research is students in 12th
grade that was used to collect data.
Method
The method used in this study was designed as a
qualitative method and were analyzed through document analyses by following Yıldırım
and Şimşek’s four-step framework. In addition for the trustworthiness, the
researcher has carried out several qualitative studies related to ELT from his
one Ph.D. degree colleagues. Then, the researcher and his colleague compared
their document analyses, talked about the similarities and differences between
their document analyses, also reached a consensus on the differences between
their analyses.
Discussion
The
study was presented according to the codes derived from the new ELTP of the
12th grade by the definition of peace education: peace with the human family,
personal peace, and peace with nature.
1. Peace with the human family. There were eight units in the new ELTP of the 12th grade are related to peace with the human family. Five units out of these eight units are directly related to peace with the human family owing to their themes and target language functions. Then, the rest three units are related to peace with the human family because of their target language functions.
2. Personal peace. There were ten units. Among of it, only two units that related to both personal peace with the human family because of their themes, target language functions, and learning objectives. Those were unit five who related to psychology as is its theme, and unit ten who its theme based on manners.
3. Peace with nature. Among ten units in the new ELTP of the 12th grade, unit 8 was only the one that related to peace with nature as it is contextualized based on alternative energy.
Results
As a
result, the findings of the study show that the purpose of peace education has
been achieved in the new ELTP of the 12th grade by integrating peace education
with ELT in an ELTP in terms of themes, target language functions, and learning
objectives, which has not been researched in the studies related to peace
education and ELT curriculum/program evaluation in the literature. The
findings of the study also point out that the learning objectives of the units
in the new ELTP of the 12th grade are closely and tightly related to the themes
and target language functions, so they also contribute to the integration of
peace education and ELT in the new ELTP.
Conclusion
The conclusion of the study, this has indicated that peace education and ELT are integrated through themes, target language functions, and learning objectives in the new ELTP of the 12th grades. It has also shown that this integration is supported by the close relationship between themes, target language functions, and learning objectives in the new ELTP. Therefore, the new ELTP of the 12th grade can teach students personal peace, peace with the human family, and peace with nature. So, students can contribute to the peaceful prevention and resolution of the conflicts and violence in their society in terms of building peace education.
Strength
1. The entire journal were describe in very detail, complete and the
result accordance with each point used as the research purposes.
2. The
researcher wrote his research in structured and neat explanation. This shows a
data analyses that was quite accurate. It is able to increase the reader’s interest
Weakness
The study limited to a country and a specific
ELTP of a specific level so that the result will be different in another
research. It means that the result of this research might be less suitable to
be applied other than at the research site and the research subject that has
been done.
