Journal  Review

The journal titled “Use of Computer Assisted Instruction to Improve Students’ Reading Skill In English Language” which is written by Habib Mohammed Abba, Muhammad Ali Mustapha, and Hajjakaltum Ali. This journal published on March 14, 2019 in a part of i-manager’s Journal on English Language Teaching, Volume 9, No. 1, that received on December 12, 2018. This study attempts to investigate the impact of Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) towards students’ reading skill in English Language. Those are students’ reading comprehension and students’ development vocabulary in senior secondary schools two (SS II) of 2015/2016 academic session.

The use of computer in language instruction is not a new trend in ELT. It has been widely applied in most developed countries where technological tools are affordable and accessible. Nevertheless, we know that many students misperceive that reading comprehension tests as time consuming, tiresome, and boring. Thus, reading comprehension became the most neglected skill (Liu, 2008). Therefore, what researchers did on Computer Assisted Instruction is as a renewal the use of computer in improving students’ reading comprehension retention ability in English language.

The result of this study showed that the use of Computer Assisted Instruction is very much effective. The researchers used mean scores and standard deviations of the pretest and posttest, and both control and experimental groups were obtained. Students’ were being investigated in three weeks, and the data point out that there are development on students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary retention ability. So, it is recommended that educational stakeholder should ensure that ICT facilities are sufficiently available in schools and language teachers should be adequately trained to utilize computers in their instruction.

The advantage of this journal is that the researchers explain the introduction and the result in a well-structured. The study presented using simple language and right on what they are being research. However, no rose without thorn, likewise with this journal. The font used in the journal looks too close in one alphabet to another. So, it is quite uncomfortable to read. Besides that, there is no explaining in detail like step by step how students get to use the Computer Assisted Instruction until they succeeded improve their reading comprehension retention ability in English language.
