Journal  Review

A journal by Sabaruddin called “Facebook Utilisation to Enhance English Writing Skill” attempts to explain a problem caused by the unenthusiastic in writing and assuming that the writing process in English is stressful and arduous among Indonesian students. This journal published on July 9, 2019 in a part of Canadian Center of Science and Education, Volume 12, No. 8. It was received on June 1, 2019.

As we know that English is foreign language in Indonesia. So, it is quite difficult to learn. However, to get to share what happened around to all over the world, the students must be able to write down something by using English so that students can transform the ideas to the reader across the globe. Moreover, having an ability to write in English is essential for students in this globalization era. Even though there are many obstacles that students have to go through together with their teacher in teaching and learning English writing skill. For example, to improve learners’ motivation to write in English, increases grammar mastery, and provides abundant learning materials for the learners to develop their English writing ability.

Therefore, Sabaruddin in his journal was critically investigated the study in secondary high school students. Sabaruddin conducted the effectiveness of utilisation Facebook in improving English writing skill context by considering the challenges, and some possible ways to encounter the obstacles to responding the issues. The reason why he used Facebook is because its simplicity and convenience. Hopefully, the result of his research could be beneficial to overcome students’ English writing difficulties in Indonesia.

The researcher used critical review of relevant study to investigate this study. The literature that was chosen from many kinds of reliable resources, then he did analyses and evaluate critically to find the information needed. Finally, the increasing students’ motivation to write in English, enhancing students’ grammar understanding, and enriching students’ learning resources were being the main topic results discussion in this journal. Those were found that Facebook utilisation might be practical to improve secondary high school students’ English writing skill in Indonesia because of three reasons.

The first reason, using Facebook in teaching English writing skill could be increased the motivation of learners by practicing their English writing through Facebook, and the little interest that students have to face in English writing could be overcome by using Facebook either. Next, Facebook utilisation in teaching English writing succeeded enhances students’ grammar understanding, because learners can give and provide feedback regarding their grammar errors found in their writing. From there, the students receiving many corrections from their friends as well as their teachers, and be able to evaluate their works resulting in increment their grammar mastery.

The last reason, Facebook can facilitate the students to share and to access learning materials. The use of Facebook as a media of teaching provides students with ample instructional materials to learn English writing skill. Then, the problem of students in Indonesia regarding the limited instructional materials could be minimized. By having abundant learning sources, students are supposed to develop their English writing skill. In conclusion the result of his research is beneficial to overcome students’ English writing difficulties in Indonesia.

This journal has many advantages, not just because the researcher chose such a good topic and all of the parts have a solid and clear explanation. It was also successfully made his work convenient to understand. The researcher fully summarizes the procedure and it followed by counter-arguments and refutations as well. Each aspect of the results, those are always shown the problem which might occurs. Then, the researcher offered solutions as well to assist the problem. From the opening until closing of this journal was really interesting to read.

However, this journal also has its disadvantage. Since the researcher just relies on relevant literature as his method. In my humble opinion, this journal would be having better results if the method that used by researcher also comes from his own research experience, and has some students as the participants to investigate more about the Facebook utilisation to enhance students' English writing skill.
